Move to scrap IIT-JEE, stress on board marks

The IITs and all other engineering schools may soon pick students based more on board examination marks than on entrance test performances, under testing reforms recommended by a panel of IIT directors.Prof Damodar Acharya, Director IIT Kharagpur who headed the key panel.

The panel, appointed by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, has recommended replacing the four-decade-old IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and myriad other engineering entrance examinations with a common test, modelled on the US-based scholastic aptitude test (SAT).

The panel has suggested that the IITs accord a 70 per cent weightage to board examination scores in picking students, in its report to Sibal accessed by The Telegraph through top panel sources.

Scores in the common aptitude test that will replace the IIT-JEE will contribute the remaining 30 per cent weightage in determining which candidates are selected, the panel has recommended.

Unlike the current engineering entrance examinations, including the IIT-JEE, the common aptitude test will not have questions on Physics, Chemistry and Math, but will test students’ powers of logical reasoning and communication skills.

If the recommendations are accepted, the IITs will, for the first time, admit students based more on their board examination marks than on their performance in a special entrance test.

The proposed reforms will also be the most wide-reaching changes to India’s undergraduate engineering admission procedure in decades. Over two million students appear for different undergraduate engineering entrance examinations every year. Over 4.5 lakh appeared for Sunday’s IIT-JEE alone.

Officials in the HRD Ministry refused to comment on the report’s contents. But top sources confirmed that Sibal, currently touring New Zealand, has asked his officials to study the report in detail so the ministry can discuss it after he returns on April 15.

The minister had announced in February that he was setting up a panel under IIT Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya to study proposed reforms to the IIT-JEE. The panel was appointed in March, with the directors of the IITs in Mumbai, Roorkee and Chennai as the other members.

Although the panel was originally intended to propose reforms only for the IIT-JEE, its recommendations, if accepted, will also mean the end of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination and all state-specific common entrance tests.

The new common aptitude test will help admit students to all undergraduate engineering institutions in India, whether run by the Centre, state governments or private managements.

The recommendations indicate that institutions other than the IITs will also be required to give 70 per cent weightage to board examination marks, but do not specifically say so.

The panel has recommended that the government develop a Comprehensive Weighted Performance Index (CWPI) to calculate a student’s overall score based cumulatively on his performance in the board examinations and in the common aptitude test. The report appears principally based on discussions at a meeting held with other government representatives, including Central Board of Secondary Education chairman Vineet Joshi and select state representatives in Chennai on March 16.

The HRD ministry is already working towards a plan to introduce a common high school curriculum in the sciences and math, cutting across the 35 boards — central and state — that govern Indian school education.

The common curriculum would make easier a comparison between the board examination scores of students from schools affiliated to different central and state government boards, Joshi had told the meeting.

The CWPI proposed by the panel is aimed at normalising any differences that remain between difficulty levels of school-leaving examinations under different boards

ലൊയോള സ്കൂള്‍

അങ്ങനെ പത്തും കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഞാന്‍ പഠിച്ച സ്കൂളില്‍ പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ വരെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു. അതുകൊണ്ട് എന്തായാലും സ്കൂള്‍ മരണം അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ തോല്‍ക്കണം. പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ മാര്‍ക്ക്‌ ( അത് ഇവിടെ പറയാന്‍ ഞാന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നില്ല. എന്തിനാ വെറുതെ? ) കുഴപ്പമില്ലാതെ ഉള്ളത് കൊണ്ടു നല്ല സ്കൂളില്‍ തന്നെ കിട്ടി. ആകെ പ്രശ്നം boys only സ്കൂള്‍ ആണ്. ബാക്കി എല്ലാം കൊണ്ടും ഞാന്‍ സന്തുഷ്ടന്‍.

പറഞ്ഞു വരുമ്പോള്‍ വല്യ സ്കൂള്‍ ആണ് ലൊയോള. ലൊയോള Indoor Stadium ആണ് കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍ വെച്ച് ഏറ്റവും വലുത്.

രണ്ടു മൂന്ന് കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്‍ പൊളിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു ഈ വല്യ കെട്ടിടം പണിയാന്‍ ‍. ഇവിടെയാണ് ലൊയോള ഹോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യാറുള്ള LA Fest നടക്കാറുള്ളത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം വരെ അത് sutter ഹാള്‍‍ വച്ച് ആയിരുന്നു നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്. ഏകദേശം പതിനാറു സ്കൂള്‍ ഈ പരിപാടിയില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കാറുണ്ട്.

ഇനി പത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വരാം. പത്താം ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ ഞാന്‍ ഭയങ്കര പഠിത്തം ആയിരുന്നു. ആരെയും ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന പഠിത്തം. ഫസ്റ്റ് എക്സാം വന്‍ വിജയമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ കളികളോട് ഇത്തിരി താല്‍പ്പര്യം വന്നു തുടങ്ങി. അവസാനം എല്ലാ ദിവസവും കളി ആയിരുന്നു. കളി എന്ന് പറയുമ്പോള്‍ എല്ലാം ഉള്‍പ്പെടും. ഫുട്ബോള്‍ തൊട്ടു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ ഗെയിം വരെ. കളിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു സമയം കിട്ടുമെങ്കില്‍ പഠിക്കാം എന്നായി. അച്ഛനെ പോലെ ഞാനും ഒരു പുലി ആണെന്നായിരുന്നു എല്ലാവരും വിചാരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ അതെല്ലാം തകര്‍ത്തു എറിഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് മെയ്‌ 28 റിസള്‍ട്ട്‌ വന്നു. എന്നേക്കാള്‍ പുറകിലായിരുന്ന പലരും മുന്‍പിലായി. അതില്‍ ഒരുത്തന്‍ കേറാന്‍ കാരണം അവന്റെ അച്ഛന്‍ കാരണം മാത്രം ആണ്. പരിക്ഷ അടുത്തപ്പോള്‍ അവന്റെ അച്ഛന്‍ ദക്ഷിണ ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ നിന്നും വന്നു അവനെ ഇരുത്തി പഠിപ്പിച്ചു. രാത്രി 2 വരെ പഠനം. അത് കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ രാവിലെ 8 മുതല്‍ വീണ്ടും രാത്രി 2 വരെ. ഇത് കേട്ടിട്ട് എനിക്ക് പ്രാന്തായി. അവന്റെ സ്ഥിതി എനിക്ക് ആലോചിക്കാന്‍ പോലും പറ്റിയില്ല. അതിനു പുറമേ എല്ലാ വിഷയങ്ങള്‍ക്കും tuition ‘ഉം ഉണ്ട്.

ഭാരതിയ വിദ്യാ ഭവനില്‍ പത്തു വര്‍ഷം പഠിച്ചു. മാറുമ്പോള്‍ ചെറിയ വിഷമം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കാരണം സ്കൂള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതിനു ശേഷമുള്ള രണ്ടാം ബാച്ച് ആണ് നമ്മള്‍. ഏകദേശം എല്ലാ ടീച്ചര്‍ക്കും എന്നെ നല്ലപോലെ അറിയാം അവരെ എനിക്കും.. ലോയോളയും bvb ‘ഉം തമ്മില്‍ നല്ല വെത്യാസം ഉണ്ട്. അതുമായി പൊരുത്തപെടാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു…..

ദുരന്തം അറിയാതെയാണ് അവള്‍ ഉണര്‍ന്നത്.. ആളുകള്‍ ഓടുന്നതു അവള്‍ ജനാലയിലുടെ കണ്ടു.. അച്ഛനും അമ്മയുടെ കൂടെ അന്ന് അവളും ഓടി എങ്ങോട്ടെന്നില്ലാതെ…

മരണ വെപ്പ്രാളത്തില്‍ ചിതറി പോയ കുടംബങ്ങള്‍ ഏറെ.. അനാഥരായ കുട്ടികള്‍ അനേകം.. രസതന്ത്ര ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ കേട്ട് പരിചയമുള്ള മീഥൈല്‍ ഐസോസയനേറ്റ് എത്ര കൂട്ടുകാര്‍ ഇര ആയി എന്നറിയാത്ത കുട്ടികള്‍.. മഞ്ഞിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ആണ് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ തീവ്രത ഏറാന്‍ കാരണം എന്ന് വിദഘ്ദര്‍.. പക്ഷെ നഷ്ട്ടപെട്ടവര്‍ക്ക് ഒന്നും പറയാനില്ല…

അധ്വാനത്തിന്റെ പകല്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞുറങ്ങിയ പതിനായിരകണക്കിന് ആളുകളെ നിത്യ നിദ്രയിലേക്ക് തള്ളിവിട്ട ചോര്‍ച്ച തുടങ്ങിയത് ഏകദേശം രാത്രി പത്തു പത്തരയോടെ ആണ്.. രാത്രി പതിനൊന്നരയോടെ പ്ലാന്റിലെ ജീവനക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ശ്വാസംമുട്ടല്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചതോടെ ആണ് വാതക ചോര്‍ച്ചയുടെ ആദ്യ സൂചന ലഭിച്ചതു..

ആളുകള്‍ ശ്വാസം മുട്ടല്‍ ചുമയും കാരണം പരിഭ്രാന്തരായി ഓടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി.. 3 മണിക്കൂര്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ഓള്‍ഡ്‌ സിറ്റി മേഖല മുഴുവന്‍ കന്നുകാലികളുടെയും മനുഷ്യരുടെയും ജഡങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ടു നിറഞ്ഞു…ദുരന്തത്തില്‍ നിന്നും കഷ്ടിച്ച് രക്ഷപെട്ട ലക്ഷങ്ങള്‍ മരിച്ചു ജീവിക്കാന്‍ വിധിക്കപെട്ടവരായി..

കോടതിക്ക് മുന്‍പ് ജനങ്ങളുടെ പ്രധിഷേധം..വിദേശ നിക്ഷേപകര്‍ക്ക് മാരക വ്യവസായം നടത്തം എന്നും മനുഷ്യര കൊന്നും ജീവച്ചവമാക്കിയും സുഖമായി കടന്നു പോകാം എന്നതിനു സുചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ് ഈ വിധി എന്ന് പ്രധിഷേധക്കാര്‍… പക്ഷെ ചുമത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന കുറ്റങ്ങള്‍ വെച്ച് പരമാവധി കൊടുക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുന്ന ശിക്ഷ ആണ് ഇത്… വെറും 2 വര്‍ഷം തടവ്‌… അന്ന് ഓള്‍ഡ്‌ സിറ്റിയില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നവര്‍ ഇന്ന് അമ്മയും അമ്മുമ്മയും ആണ്.. 25000 പേരെ കൊന്നോടുക്കിയവര്‍ക്ക് തൂക്കു മരം വേണം എന്നാണ് അവരുടെ ആവശ്യം.. 25000 പേരെ കൊന്നോടുക്കിയവര്‍ക്ക് വെറും 25000 രൂപയുടെ ജാമ്യം.. ഇത് നീതിയാണോ?

I almost check this site everyday.. I akmost read all the articles written by Alexis Leon in this site..

I commented on one of his articles.. I wished him a Happy new year too… The next day , when I checked the site again.. I found that he had wished me too…!! I was very happy… I posted him the url of this blog.. but I think he haven’t read this..

“True friends are hard to find…”- one of my friends orkut profile name.. “Yes..true friends are hard o find..” I also thought….
I cannot chose a friend, I’m weak in that profession. I had a friend once.. A good friend.. I told him whatever secrets I knew..[then we were student of 2nd std [:D] ]Secrets was one of the huge things that a child studying in second standard can have.. I told him whatever I knew….

But once he left me…”He BETRAYED me..!!!”.. I didn’t talk to anyone for days.. I hardly replied to an SMS which beeped into my mobile.. “He BETRAYED me..” that sentence reflected in my mind..

The person who said this sentence may not care about the pain..the hurt that caused in the heart of mine!! The person who didn’t talk to me had a friend who also didn’t talk to me.. I don’t know why..? The grown up boys are acting like a growing up boys..!! Days after a SMS beeped into my phone..

“I’m sorry 4 whatever I had done.. u can call me anything.. anything u like 2 call me..
But u should listen 2 whatever I’ve 2 say.. Pls Its a humble request..”

I didn’t know what to reply… I was totally confused.. Anger and happiness both flushed into my mind…
“What to do Pranav..? You should take a decision..!!” I replied..

Finally we were friends again.. I was back to my good old days…. They became grown ups…
But one evening…one evening.. I told one thing to my friend…

“I’m sure.. I will bet a 30rs.. you and I’ll never get above 90 for science as we will not get enough marks for m.c.q and practicals!!”

He translated to his own language and told to all friends he had currently..

“I’m sure.. I will bet a 30rs.. you will never get above 90 for science as you will not get enough marks for m.c.q and practicals!!”

True friends are hard to find…………

“Gotta go.. Somebody is callin in my mobile” [Although nobody was calling!!]

Nobody was calling.. I just wanted 2 be free from Hindi freaking exam thoughts..[I didn't want to get pissed off imagining the results]
Soon I went out from my home 4 a relief… When I reached home my mother told that samir called me and told that there will be no school tomorrow..
Instead of calling him I called Viju.. [as he knows probably all current affairs happening in my school]
I asked him “what hapened??Why there is no school tomorrow??”
He replied” Our secretary sir [Gopalaraman Sir] had passed away due to heart failure!!”
“Ohh.. what happened?”
“Heart failure.. I think so”
“How much did he age??”
“Almost 90″
I was thinking “What the hell dude?? Working still in 90 years.. Man this person is a workaholic”
I asked “Will there be school tomorrow?
“nope”
I thanked god many times before he finished the conversation… I didn’t listen to what he said after..
I was feeling very happy..[not due 2 the death of gopalaraman sir]
“Ohh yeah..I have to rock this evening!!”
Logged into facebook..and had a chat with Mr.Anirudh Sanjeev a Programmer cum Blogger..

I almost enjoyed every moment of that evening!!
When I went to bed :
“Ohh man… Maths exam on Friday .. will get really pissed!!!!!!”

It was an exam day…………
Before the exam:
Did you study everything? I know you! You will study everything!!
During the exam:
What to do…??? Ahh what is the answer of the question!! Ohh my god..
After the exam:
Pranav :Ohh no… I will lose in the exam!! Heyy Varun!! Did u write anything? I’m sure that I will lose in the exam!!
Varun : Do I have to believe you again?? Last exam You said the same statement “Heyy Varun!! I will lose in the exam!!” Then how much marks did you score? You got more marks than me!! almost in every subjects!
Pranav: But that was last time na!!
Varun: What last time?? Dont say anything !! I’m sure you will scre above 80′s!!
Pranav: Yeah okay!! Bet.. I’m sure I will not get above 80..!! 10rs bet!!
Varun : BET!!!
After some time I reached Home.. There was a cousin in my home..
He said ” namaskaram..”
I greeted him.. [ even though I dont know who that fellow was!! ]
After that I went upstairs and switched on my PC..[This was done for a relief from the memories of the horrible social exam]
I logged in to the facebook.. found that my two friends was online..and greeted them hello…
They replied something. I didnt care about that..
Next step was to type the following words in the address bar..

I scrolled down the page and looked for any comments..
I was so sad that there was no comments..

I created this blog long back and wrote an article about ‘Procrastination’.. but none read nor commented !!

Several days back one of my classmates asked
Viju : “Heyy, whats your blog’s address..??”
I was so Happy that out of the whole universe one person is going to read my blog..!!
Next moment my classmate got deviated from this topic as soon as another classmate called him!!

Okay… back to the present situation!!
I just checked my blog and logged out from facebook and G Talk..
I went downstairs and asked mother who was that fellow..? Then she said some relation..!!
Although I dint know how was that Uncle related to me, we started talking soon after the lunch..
He was a great fan of Films and he had already seen almost every newly arrived film!!

He told stories of the films and said that ” You must watch these films after your exams”
“yeah sure”I said
After he went , I again logged into facebook and continued my chatting sessions..

I opened my new blog and again looked fr comments..
Nothing was the result..
I decided to write a story again….”Short Story..”
